EMDR THERAPY IN McKINNEY, Online Therapy in TX & FL

Heal your trauma & break free from self-sabotaging beliefs, feelings and behaviors.

You want more than Talk Therapy.

You’ve tried talk therapy and feel so self-aware, but you spend so much energy trying to “logic your way” through the feelings and thoughts that still hang out in the background.

Maybe you have experienced some recent trauma, or have a lifetime of trauma that is really affecting your relationships, your calm, or work life.

Maybe you’ve noticed that talk therapy was helpful, but you know you neeed something else to finally get over the things that keep you stuck.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) is a form of therapy that finds the negative beliefs, emotions, and body sensations attached to your memories  and helps you unravel the jumbled negative associations so that you can finally connect to the more positive neural pathways in your brain!

EMDR is effective in treating :

  • PTSD

  • Trauma and Complex Trauma

  • Sexual Trauma

  • Childhood trauma

  • Traumatic Grief

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Self Esteem

  • Caregiver Burnout

  • Interpersonal and Relational Issues

  • Critical Illness (including anxiety around upcoming procedures)

how i can help

EMDR Therapy can help you heal from your anxiety, depression, low-self esteem, trauma and more!

When we experience trauma or an adverse experience, at that  moment in time, our brain releases a chemical surge of emotion throughout your body.  It records that memory as a movie clip with  physical body sensations from the way your body recorded the emotion. And over time, the brain tries to make meaning of the experience about who we are, about others or the world around us, such as:

  • “I am not good enough,

  • I am not lovable,

  • something is wrong with me,

  • I am not safe,

  • I am on my own,

  • I am bad,

  • I cannot show my emotions and more.

After a period of time, we begin to “reprocess” those maladaptive memories by titrating your exposure to the memories and how it’s stored in your body. You get to step into the memory as yourself or as a fly on the wall who just observes the past version of yourself. Through a method of bilateral stimulation (tapping, eye movement, buzzers, etc), we overtax the brain and it dumps the unnecessary data (the physical response) and give yourself room to build your inner resilience.

Even if you don’t have trauma, EMDR is an incredibly helpful method to reduce anxiety, depression, PTSD symptoms, low self-esteem, addictions and more.

EMDR targets identifying the negative, limiting beliefs  that subconciously or consciously drive our anxieties, fears, avoidance or self-sabotaging thoughts and behaviors.  These negative experiences create a clog in the way you process memories and new information.

EMDR is more than talk therapy. Actually, even if you have a significant experience that you are too embarrassed or ashamed to talk about, you don’t have to share it during your session to still reap the benefits of EMDR.  EMDR actually works most effectively when you spend less time talking and verbally processing the information that comes up. It wants you to be less “heady” and “cognitive” and more explorative of your mind, body and soul.

In other types of therapy, you work significantly to create awareness around the trigger and the visceral response that is instantaneously activated, then rely on your ability to use Logic and tap into breathing exercises or other mindful approaches.

EMDR helps you rewire the brain in a way that the triggers don’t automatically jump to the negative feelings or thoughts.

EMDR therapy is like taking a helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon of your brain. You can see where the rivers have once flowed powerfully, creating larrge valleys and smaller valleys that branch off. When the water flows, it follows the valley most traveled, which might be  valleys constantly filled with turmoil, negative feelings and adverse experiences. We work to stop feeding the negative valleys,  look to find smaller branches to direct to,  and eventually  cut off the flow to troubled waters and redirect to valleys that lead to calmer waters.

EMDR in Action?

EMDR has 8 phases, but the more intense part of EMDR happens in phase 4.

In Phase 1, we spend time exploring your family of origin,  discussing the trauma you experienced, and looking for common themes around the different adverse experiences you have lived through.  We explore what negative beliefs are holding you back from lving your life the way you want to.

We spend the time to create your EMDR specific treatment plan, which includes the list of negative beleifs and a target memory associated with those beliefs.

In Phase 2, We explore your internal coping strategies and add a few more skills to your bag.

In Phase 3 - 4, we begin the EMDR reprocessing and allow your brain to heal itself.

In Phase 5-8, once we work down the negative beliefs to a level that those beliefs no longer feel true to you, we further strengthen what you want to believe instead about yourself, your trauma or any adverse experience. We identify any other negative beliefs that need to be addressed and start back at Phase 3-4 for any other beliefs.

When we have worked through the significant limiting beliefs, we wrap up your sessions in a pretty little bow!

Common questions about EMDR therapy

  • Nope! Bilateral stimulation can be done in a variety of methods. In person, I’ve gotten you taken care of! If you are online, you are able to use your computer screen, headphones (optional), and your own arms and two hands! Most clients do well with tapping on their own with the "butterfly hug," but occasionally, I will send a website link to clients who are better suited for on-screen bilateral stimulation but this method will not work on your cell phone.

  • EMDR is not physically painful but you are revisiting events that could be emotionally painful to think about. You are tapping into memories with loaded emotions and negative beliefs in short intervals of time while using bilateral stimulation such as eye movement, bilateral auditory stimulation, or bilateral tapping.

  • If you already have a therapist who does not do EMDR, you can ABSOLUTELY stay with your therapist to continue working on your goals with them AND work through your EMDR goals with Adriana. This approach actually helps you focus only on EMDR and maximize your time in the sessions. You can have your therapists communicate with each other with a Release of Information form. This is one of the therapy models that allows for two therapists because EMDR treats different goals.

  • Absolutely! Adriana is limited by her licensing board (BHEC) in providing EMDR therapy within the state of Texas or online in Florida.. But if you choose to travel in to Texas to have EMDR therapy, please contact Adriana to discuss how to properly create an after-care program.

  • In short, Yes. Intensives are excellent ways to really get straight to work without the distractions of day to day life. But an after-care program will need to be set to make sure that you have support after your intensive, which can be quite....intense. 😅
